Benedict & Dessert Residence
A Northwest Eddie Bauer Edition.

This was an unusual project for us in the fact that the property has a main house, as well as, a mother-in-law residence. The catch here was we did not believe either home should be featured more than the other. The property also sloped down to the residence. Because of this, comfortable and aesthetic stairways became a focal point of this landscape.

The architecture of the house is a Northwest classic, so using large high cascade granite rock to hold up the slopes was a natural approach. We treated the property like looking at the side of a dramatic mountain, and considered it a sculpture in nature. We also used natural bluestone steps from the sidewalk coming down and entering on the property. After walking down three cut bluestone steps, one arrives onto a large, irregular bluestone landing that takes you to either the larger home, back up to a mortared bluestone porch or down a set of granite riser steps to the mother-in-laws home.

The gardens blend, however, the subtle differences define the individual personalities of each home and offer charm to the property. The area between the two homes which lead down to the garage is also made to look like a hike down a spectacular mountain slope. It winds gently to the driveway with very simple wrought iron railing that mimic the motion of the steps. The iron railing along the other steps adds to the cohesiveness of the landscape while not taking away from the natural flow of the rock.

The simplicity of the plantings, compliment the hardscape rather than compete with it. The focal point in plant material, are four specimen Green Japanese Maples, which grace the landscape with amazing form. The low voltage lighting adds a whole new dimension at night and the automatic irrigation keep these gardens flourishing all spring and summer.

This project receives constant enjoyment from both residents and the many people who pass by. It is a pleasure to see the owner’s green thumb at work all year around.
