Joyner Residence
An inner city courtyard fusing Asian with a Northwest edge.

The front garden space is very small and dimensionally awkward in relation to the residence. We needed to create a garden that looked like it could support and nestle in the house.

This project was originally initiated because the client did not want the neighborhood dogs to use their property. Because of this, we knew some sort of barrier would be required.

The first concept we came up with was the need of a heavy base to anchor the house down as it had the appearance that it was disappering upward. The way we did this was to raise the property level using a strong, dry stack wall around the perimeter. On the top of that we designed a wrought iron fence and two wrought iron gates. This offered weight and privacy of an older style enclosure to go with the architecture as well as interest. The wrought iron was a wonderful solution to privacy and barrier because it left the space airy and offered an artistic, old world feeling complimenting the architecture of the house and neighborhood.

The clients request was to blend a Northwest style with a bit of European formal. The hardscape of an old world stackable rock for the low walls, combined with a more natural, jagged rock we used for the waterfall focal point were a perfect blend to set this concept into motion.

The plant material is more formal using Little Gem Magnolias as the main tree combined with a couple of Japanese Maples and a special request of a Weeping Flowering Cherry tree. The lower plant materials offer texture, color combinations and are more typically what one might find in a Northwest garden.

Our clients were very specific regarding the look and feel they hoped for in this garden, we are pleased to report that they have recieved satisfaction, perhaps beyond their expectations.
