Knowles Residence
An Inviting Seaside Garden
Every landscape site has some outstanding feature before we even arrive. This humble cottage just happens to have an unforgettable, unobstructed view of the Puget Sound from it's front garden.
Our clients wishes included an inviting, but personal, feel from which she could chat with the passers by, while at the same time creating a little space for personal refection. To create this, we designed in these wide granite steps with a winding brick and granite path. The bricks were gathered over the years from the beach and were installed by the owner. The first stopping point just prior to the front door is a four posted cedar arbor for "get- a- way" seating. This also acts as a welcoming point to a relatively humble front entrance.
The site is extemely harsh on plant material due to high winds and salt air. As usual, we chose plants which offered color, texture, and form while ensuring special consideration to the cultural conditions. This garden is thriving with it's Roses, Ornamental Grasses, Rockrose, Ceanothus, Kinnikinnick, Pines, Lavender, Thyme, Weeping Katsura's and various other plant materials. Friendly, functional and just a lovely beach garden.
