A Small City Garden Made Spacious This large home, built on a relatively small piece of property, began with a garden area and simple concrete stairs leading up to the front door. We demolished everything and created an area to both entertain in, as well as, provide a welcoming entrance for friends and family. We sculpted the land with granite rock, which created an intimate sunken courtyard lined with the natural rock seating. An overhead pergola was designed in a large scale to provide an anchor for this sizable home. Climbing roses were planted at each post and will drape the arbors and scent the garden with fragrant perfumes. The Magnolia soulangeana trees will surround this courtyard with strong sculptured branches and their magnificent purple flowers will add additonal beauty in springtime. White bark Jacquemonte Birch was planted to define the property lines. A back drop was created with the rich color of the Emerald Green pyramidalis. This framed in privacy sets off the mystery as the winding pathways meander to either side of the house to the back garden. As you wind around to the back sliding door you enter onto what used to be a small patio of exposed aggregate and a few plants. This became a cedar deck offering twice the living area. The deck was carefully cut to mold around a granite waterfall. The waterfall was set in the small corner of this landscape and offers the illusion that the water comes from a larger source from behind. Clematis will grow up the simple pergola, which frames this deck and lends to a more private garden from the neighbors. This small garden space has now become a pleasant slice of paradise. |
