Winter Residence
A Northwest garden with a focus
on a formal rose garden.

This garden site is a wonderfully large area with the original landscape barely taking advantage of it's scale. This family's interest was to actively use the property for their children to play in, while entertaining groups from small and intimate to the grandiose. Because of this focus on entertainment, several "outdoor rooms" were established.

Immediately off of the back kitchen we replaced a small stamped concrete patio with a large cedar deck with two separate arbors. The area with the large arbor is used for dining out of the sun. A barbecue right around the corner. This arbored deck will be covered with purple Wisteria. The view from here is panoramic and features raised granite vegetable/perennial beds. A large raised rose garden with a center bluestone patio and a mounded area with large granite outcroppings (actually the septic system) was then used to create a dramatic back drop. This offers the space for a generous meandering dry stream bed that leads the eye down to the far end of the property where a small patio looks upon the children's play area.

Hundreds of yards of topsoil were imported in to both improve the quality of the present soil and mound the existing beds. Many tons of granite slabs were imported to create a natural Northwest feeling. The granite slabs provide an additional area for the children to play, or can be utilized as seating or small tables.

The lawn areas were all renovated to create a smooth, lush pallet from which all the "outdoor rooms" can be reached.

This garden was designed as a private park and appears to be well enjoyed for all it offers.
